Get charID, typeID or stringID of an active layer?

I am writing a script where I want to check for Linked SmartObjects, I can properly check for a layer being a smartObject and I was wondering if there was a way for me to simply get the charID,type or stringID from the layer so I can compare the value and determine if its Linked.
